Gargoyle Gecko

Gargoyle Gecko (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) Care Sheet

Quick Facts

Scientific Name: Rhacodactylus auriculatus
Common Names: Gargoyle Gecko
Origin: New Caledonia
Adult Size: 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) total length
Lifespan: 12–15 years in captivity
Sex Differences: Males are generally smaller with pronounced hemipenal bulges; females are larger and more robust-bodied
Beginner Suitability: Easy – hardy, relatively docile species ideal for beginners

Enclosure

Size: Minimum 45 cm x 45 cm x 60 cm (18 x 18 x 24 inches) for a single adult. Taller enclosures are preferred to allow climbing. Juveniles can start in smaller enclosures (30 cm x 30 cm x 45 cm) but must be upgraded as they grow.

Substrate: Use coconut fibre, orchid bark, or paper-based substrates. Bioactive setups are recommended. Avoid loose sand or substrates that can cause impaction.

Hides: Provide multiple hides at different heights. Include cork bark, hollow logs, or artificial caves. Vertical climbing structures are essential.

Heating: Maintain a hot spot of 28–30°C and a cool side of 22–24°C. Night temperatures can drop to 20–22°C. Use ceramic heat emitters or low-wattage heat bulbs regulated with a thermostat.

Lighting: UVB is optional but low-level UVB (2–5%) can benefit health. Maintain a 12-hour light / 12-hour dark cycle.

Humidity: Maintain 50–70% humidity. Mist daily to provide droplets for hydration and to assist with shedding.

Diet

Primary Diet Type: Omnivore

Food Items: Feed commercially available gecko diet powders mixed with water, supplemented with gut-loaded insects such as crickets, locusts, and roaches. Juveniles require more insects for protein.

Feeding Frequency: Juveniles daily; adults every 2–3 days. Dust insects with calcium at every feeding and a multivitamin supplement once per week.

Feeding Troubleshooting: Ensure insects are appropriately sized. Offer variety to encourage feeding. Monitor for picky eaters and adjust diet accordingly.

Water

Provide a shallow water dish with fresh water at all times. Mist the enclosure to maintain humidity and hydration.

Behavior And Handling

Gargoyle Geckos are generally docile and tolerate handling well. Support the full body and avoid sudden movements. They are solitary and should be housed individually or in compatible pairs with monitoring.

Enrichment

Provide branches, cork bark, and climbing surfaces. Include hiding spots at multiple heights. Rearranging décor occasionally encourages exploration and natural behaviour.

Health

Signs of illness include lethargy, refusal to eat, abnormal stool, retained shed, or swelling. Maintain proper temperature, humidity, and diet. Consult a reptile-specialist veterinarian if issues persist.

Lifespan

Typically 12–15 years in captivity with proper care, some individuals living longer.

Legality In The UK

Gargoyle Geckos are legal to keep in the UK. No licence is required for private ownership. Owners must comply with Welfare of Animals regulations.
